Job Summary

The holder of this position will advance and protect the company’s reputation primarily through welldesigned, strategic national, regional and local media relations initiatives that foster a positive public perception of company by influencing public opinion or promoting, products and services, CSR, ESG, including the Aflac Duck and the company’s innovative My Special Aflac Duck robot.

 

Principal Duties & Responsibilities 

  • Ensures the company has world-class public relations services and capabilities to develop and deliver its messages; maintains editorial calendars and other processes to ensure the right information is delivered at the appropriate time to the right audience to foster engaged, wellinformed stakeholders. 
  • Pitches, prepares and executes media interviews with top executives in the company, including CSuite executives with top tier media. 
  • Ensures public relations plans align with business unit objectives and are consistent with corporate goals; measures effectiveness of external communications; works to improve company scores for seven RepTrak® dimensions of corporate reputation as appropriate; communicates how media coverage may impact company’s business; holds self and others accountable for results. 
  • Manages and develops direct report(s), including hiring, training, appraising and supporting employee(s); manages relationships with external PR agencies; motivates team member(s) and agency partners to new levels of excellence. 
  • Efficiently manages agencies and corresponding budgets demonstrating significant ROI.
  • Directs public relations efforts for Aflac’s innovative My Special Aflac Duck Program for the purpose of promoting Aflac as a strong corporate citizen, and to continuously build awareness of the program with a goal of distributing more ducks to children across the country. 
  • In collaboration with Social Media and Legal teams, develops and implements influencer campaigns and other digital-first public relations tactics to reach diverse audiences and drive brand reputation, awareness and understanding. 
  • Works with Corporate Communications leadership and crisis communications team to mitigate negative issue exposure and crisis scenarios quickly and effectively. 
  • Leads Corporate Facebook team, generating reputation enhancing content and strategy in line with the Reputation Institute’s 7 dimensions of reputation. 
  • In collaboration with Corporate Communications and Sales leadership, develops strategic public relations plans and manages the implementation of integrated media relations campaigns to support overall business strategy and marketing objectives through consumer, business, producer, product and cause initiatives to drive brand reputation, awareness and understanding. 
  • Develops media materials and provides exceptional public relations writing and editing skills utilizing AP Style, to include press releases, bylined and feature articles, executive key messages, and more, often related to complex business issues; oversees executive visibility and thought leadership program to support marketing leaders and campaigns. 
  • Serves as representative of the company and proactively pitches national, business and local media for B2B, producer, product and consumer initiatives including, sponsorship and corporate philanthropy; coordinates and staffs executive media interviews, speaking engagements, and media events and tours; conducts executive media training prior to interviews; maintains key relationships with target reporters. 
  • Manages effective use of internal and external resources and spend; ensures adherence to corporate standards and DOI Compliance regulations. Assesses the quality, timeliness, satisfaction and optimum use of resources for integrated marketing public relations programs and projects; implements or drives process improvements. 
  • Serves as business partner and acts as a liaison between Corporate Communications and internal partners, including B2B, Producer and Consumer channel managers, Product Marketing, Broker and Field Communications, Internal Communications, Digital Marketing, Social Media and other key areas in Corporate Communications to ensure an integrated communications approach/strategy. 
  • Stays abreast of current trends and best practices in public relations and recommends new approaches as appropriate to the evolving marketing strategies. 
  • Performs other related special projects and duties as required.

 

Education & Experience Required

  • Minimum Required Bachelor's Degree in Public Relations, Communications, Marketing, Business Administration, or a related field
  • Minimum Required Eight to ten years of experience demonstrating excellent public relations, media relations, people management and crisis management skills
  • Minimum Required Five+ years management experience
  • Minimum Required Six+ years of experience in a complex business environment involving multiple business issues and requiring the ability to collaborate with a variety of stakeholders
  • Minimum Required Knowledge and understanding of social media, ideally with previous experience as a community manager.
  • Minimum Required Strong organizational and demonstrable writing skills, including articles, guides and publications for a variety of media. Sound PR judgement and crisis management experience.

 

 

Education & Experience Preferred

  • Preferred Must have superior business acumen; preference to insurance industry.

 

Or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
