Work Designation – Depending on your location within the continental US, this role may be hybrid or remote.

  • If you live within 50 miles of the Aflac offices located in Columbia, SC, this role will be hybrid. This means you will be expected to work in the office for at least 60% of the work week. You will work from your home (within the continental US) for the remaining portion of the work week. Details of this schedule will be discussed with your leadership. 
  • If you live more than 50 miles from the Aflac offices located in Columbia, SC, this role will be remote. This means you will be expected to work from your home, within the continental US. If the role is remote, there may be occasions that you are requested to come to the office based on business need. Any requests to come to the office would be communicated with you in advance.

Education & Experience Required

  • Juris doctor from an ABA-accredited school of law
  • Admitted to practice law in one state or territory of the USA
  • Active member of good standing of the bar in at least one state or territory
  • Ten years of law practice experience in a combination of law firm and corporate settings

Or an equivalent combination of education and experience

 

Travel

  • Less than or equal to 10%

 

Principal Duties & Responsibilities

This position is in legal operations.  In operations, we support the inner workings of the entire business.  As such you will:

    • Review the law and the insurance contract, break down complicated legal language and help the business to understand parameters.
    • Think outside of the box.  You will help the business to not only understand the parameters of the law, but to come up with creative solutions for complying. 
    • Make connections.  You will look at the business as a whole and help bring consistency to operational areas. You will work in all of areas of operations: product, underwriting, eligibility, claims, appeals, complaints and litigation.  You will have the ability to look at “lessons learned” and help the business to find solutions for past problems. 
    • Be part of project teams.  You will join the business in important projects, advising and taking an active role in looking at the law and business solutions.
    • Jump in where needed.  You will have the ability to review many different documents that come your way.  You will need to know how to investigate issues, partner with the business and be an active part of the legal team and the extended business team. Evaluates potential legal issues related to negotiated legal documents and business transactions and advises management accordingly
    • Perform other duties as required

 

Total Rewards

The salary range for this job is $150,000 - $200,000. This range is specific to the job and salary offers consider a wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions, including, but not limited to: education, experience, licensure, certifications, geographic location, and peer compensation. The range has been created in good faith based on information known to Aflac at the time of the posting.

 

At Aflac, it is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the range for the role to allow for future and continued salary growth, and compensation decisions are dependent on the circumstances of each case. This salary range does not include any potential incentive pay or benefits, however, such information will be provided separately when appropriate.
