Job Summary

Within Aflac Global Investments, a wholly owned subsidiary of Aflac, Inc., we are looking to add a new role to our investment platform; an analyst for the Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) Research and Analytics who will be an Assistant Vice President (AVP).  The AVP, ESG Research and Analytics will be part of ESG Investment Strategies Team and support its mission to advance Responsible Investing framework within Aflac. ESG Research and Analytics will report to the Head of ESG Investment Integration, who reports to the Sr. Managing Director, U.S. Chief Investment Officer, who is also the Global Head of ESG Investment Strategies, Head of Asset Management Risk, and Global Head of Direct Lending, Real Estate, and Infrastructure Debt at Aflac Global Investments. 


As part of the team, ESG Research and Analytics will be involved in in the design, recommendation and implementation of GI’s ESG data and analytics strategy and framework to advance the contributions of GI towards Aflac’s transition to carbon neutrality by 2040 and net zero emissions by 2050. 


The individual will support the Head of ESG Investment Integration and the Head of Investment Sustainability in providing ESG investment research and analytics, reporting, and developing and maintaining in-depth knowledge related to the firm’s ESG investment activities and Responsible Investing framework.


As part of the team, the ESG Research and Analytics, in collaboration with the investment teams, will support identification, recommendation and implementation of best practices for GI’s responsible investing policies, ESG taxonomy and screening standards for internally and externally managed investments.  The individual will support establishment of GI’s classification, monitoring, reporting and disclosure frameworks to assure fulfillment of GI and Aflac’s ESG investing policies, reporting requirements (e.g., CDP, TCFD) and Aflac’s obligations as a signatory to the United Nations sponsored Principles for Responsible Investing (PRI).  The Analyst will also support the development of GI’s decarbonization strategies (Net Zero Transition Plan), target-setting, climate-risk management and sustainability solutions. The individual will have close collaboration with GI’s operations, data and IT business teams and will support Aflac Inc.’s and Aflac Asset Management Japan (AAMJ) ESG initiatives.

Key Responsibilities


The ESG Research and Analytics will support leadership of ESG Investment Strategies Team, including the Head of Investment Integration and the Head of Investment Sustainability in the remit of their responsibilities and activities:


  • ESG Analytics & Reporting Frameworks:  Support the development, recommendation and implementation of GI’s NZTP monitoring and reporting framework and process for standardized internal/external reporting, ensuring appropriate controls for financial/non-financial disclosures and audit integrity.  Support design and recommendation of GI’s ESG taxonomy, qualitative/quantitative frameworks to monitor/report ESG progress, support preparation of various ESG-related reports (CDP, TCFD, etc.) and facilitate response to constituents’ ESG inquiries. 


  • ESG Investment Research:  Support and provide expert and topical ESG research commensurate with evolving sustainability, decarbonization and climate risk practices, methodologies and reporting protocols.  Support value-added ESG research tailored to the asset class challenges facing internal and external investing teams.


  • ESG Investment Process:  Support the development and recommendation of ESG investment parameters, materiality filters, metrics and screening and classification methods to integrate GI’s ESG commitments and goals into its investment processes for internal and external portfolio management.  Support establishing processes for appropriate application (e.g., sensitivity to tobacco/other exclusions, PRI commitments, stewardship and engagement, ESG and climate risk scoring).  Work with senior team leadership to develop training and support to ensure consistency and compliance with agreed-on objectives.


  • Net Zero Transition:  Support the design, recommendation and monitoring of GI’s Net Zero Transition Plan (NZTP) and implementation roadmap for Aflac’s general account investments. Support peer/industry research to assist GI in selecting NZTP target(s) and transition pathway(s).  Collaborate with  the team’s senior leadership to: (1) evaluate selection of NZTP base year and future data dependencies; (2) develop GI’s NZTP monitoring and reporting framework and process for standardized internal/external reporting; and (3) ensure appropriate controls for financial/non-financial disclosures and audit integrity.


  • Climate Change Risk:  Support completion of the development, recommendation and monitoring of GI’s climate-risk management plan and implementation roadmap for Aflac’s general account investments.  Using foundational work of the investment teams on climate transition risk analysis, support development of investment management responses and priorities for the risks identified.  Help advance the work of the investment teams on climate physical risk and support Head of Investments Sustainability to develop an appropriate data and analytical tools to monitor and mitigate risks.  Support senior team leadership to coordinate with investment and risk teams on the establishment of Aflac and GI’s climate scenario analysis and stress testing to ensure preparedness for PRI, TCFD, CDP and regulatory disclosures.


  • Sustainability Solutions:  Help advance Aflac and GI’s progress towards its net zero commitments by supporting development and adoption of low carbon and climate mitigation strategies/opportunities.  Support development and recommendation of a quantitative analytical framework to evaluate future investments and tradeoffs of using carbon offsets, renewables and other carbon capture and nature-based opportunities. Support Head of Investments Sustainability to perform and disseminate research to determine the value of other ESG and sustainability affiliations and commitments (e.g., SBTi, SASB, PCAF, NZAOA, NZIA).


  • ESG Investing Policies:  Support senior team leadership to develop and integrate approved enhancements to GI’s ESG Investing Policy for consistency and support of Aflac and GI’s Responsible Investing framework and public commitments.  Collaborate with investment teams to develop and enhance specific asset class investing policies/procedures, with attention to the PRI Principles of stewardship and engagement.  Support GI’s management and collaborate with colleagues in legal, compliance, financial risk and operational risk management to establish appropriate accountabilities, controls and governance.


  • ESG Advisory:  Support the development of Aflac and GI’s future decarbonization strategies, target setting, climate-risk management, and investments stewardship and engagement goals.  Support senior team leadership in preparation of deliverable for GI’s ESG Steering Committee, Aflac’s ESG Working Group, Aflac global committees, ESG consultancy projects and industry/peer forums.  Support the transformation of GI’s investment business by developing and providing ESG subject matter expertise, as GI continues to build out its strategic investment, Responsible Investing framework and asset management platform.



  • At minimum of 7 years of experience as a portfolio analyst, portfolio management support, or in similar roles
  • Undergraduate degree in Engineering, Economics, Mathematics, Statistics, Finance or related field; CFA is a plus
  • Certifications and/or training in ESG frameworks a plus 


  • Strong quantitative and qualitative data management, analytical and critical thinking skills with demonstrated ability to successfully present and communicate results of the analysis
  • Familiarity with ESG  industry, sustainability, regulatory frameworks in North America, Europe, Asia (e.g., PRI, SASB, CDP, TCFD) and application of responsible investment initiatives and target setting protocols (e.g., SBTi, NZAOA)
  • Working knowledge of investments and global capital markets, with experience applying critical thinking and investments analysis effectively in insurance and/or financial organizations
  • Working knowledge of portfolio analysis and reporting for buy-side or sell-side firms in fixed income, equity or other asset classes; experience in insurance asset management is a plus
  • Ability to multi-task, execute on goals, prioritize and meet deadlines; ability to solve problems
  • Self-motivated; demonstrated ability to working in a highly collaborative team environment


Technical Skills

  • Advanced Excel skills - including full suite of MS Office products
  • Programming skills ( e.g. Python, VBA) a plus
